BACKGROUND
Dulao, a baranggay of Aringay, La Union, is a small community near the South China Sea. The primary means of livelihood is the raising of milkfish (bangus) in large fishpens. Bangus is probably the favorite fish variety in the Philippines. Despite this, most of the people in Dulao (and the neighboring baranggay of Canada) are very poor and are, in fact, squatters—living on someone else’s land.
Dulao Baptist Church, pastured by Rey Abellera, has been working in this area for several years. He also heads a training school and church-planting ministry headquarted at the church called One Hope Ministry. We have worked with One Hope Ministry before in Balbalossa, La Union, and Linggaoa and Pidpid, Ilocos Sur. These mission sites have led to new churches being established.
COMMENTS:
Our team was composed of close to 20 individuals from the Baguio Area, along with additional medical assistance from Manila and La Union. Other volunteers were from the host church and One Hope Ministry. We commonly work with local schools and baranggay officials. However, in this case we worked strictly with the church. In part, this was possible since the church grounds were adequate to handle the crowds. Also, the church was centrally located between two target communities.
We were blessed with two ophthalmologists who joined us for this trip. They were a great help. They were able to give out 78 pairs of glasses to patients who needed them. Additionally, 6 individuals were found to have cataracts. They are being forwarded to others for cataract surgery.
We always expect our host group to prepare the area for the mission. However, even more important, the host is expected to do follow-up of the patients who come. This is especially true of those who have made a spiritual decision or expressed interest in discipleship. The local group was planning to start doing follow-up on the same day.
With our prayer partners and supporters and by the grace of God, we will continue to reach out to the lost in remote parts of the Philippines through the medical evangelical mission outreaches. Thanks be to God Almighty.
To all volunteers, thank you for your personal sacrifices and love for the lost souls. To our supporters and prayer partners, thank you once again for your participation and love offerings. To all of you, we couldn’t have done it without your prayers and encouragement. To God be the glory.
God bless you.
