On Saturday, September 20, Spring Hill is sponsoring a day long workshop on autism. The workshop is being held in our Missions Hall and will begin at 9 a.m. and end by 3 p.m. Donna Cattell-Gordon, one of the founders of the VIA School, will be one of our presenters. There are plans to invite several other VIA teachers who have expertise in particular areas pertaining to autism. June Ellman, Director of Research and Outcomes at The Arc of the Piedmont, will also be a presenter. A cost of $30.00 ($25.00 early registration by September 15) covers refreshments, lunch, and handout materials.
The following sessions and topics have been identified:
Session 1: Birth and the Early Years
- Identifying signs of autism
- Where to find help
- Teaching basic skills – toileting, eating out, being in public places, etc.
- Learning how to advocate for your child
- Preparing for the school environment
Session 2: School Years
- Navigating IEPs and the school system
- Following a schedule
- Homework
- After-school issues
- Coping and social skills
Session 3: Puberty/Teen Years
- Fear management
- Socialization
- Siblings and home life
- Personal safety and hygiene issues
- Moving toward independence
Session 4: Adulthood
- Job potential
- Housing choices
- Current legislation (or lack thereof)
- Resources
- Support groups/fellowship opportunities
- Potential church ministries
