Around 1850 a body of believers gathered, apparently in an old shed, under the chestnuts and oaks on a ridge known as Spring Hill, near Ruckersville, VA. A meeting house was constructed in 1852. However, we recognize the official beginning of our church as June 10, 1854, when the church adopted a Constitution and joined the Baptist General Association of Virginia as “Baptist Church of Christ at Spring Hill”. Benjamin Creel served as the first pastor.
From 1854 until 1970, when the church accepted Pastor Leroy Davis as pastor, all pastors were circuit pastors, working with Spring Hill and other Baptist churches in the area. In recent years additional ministerial staff have been hired to meet the growing needs and opportunities for service in our church, the surrounding community, and the world.
Since 1993, our senior pastor has been Dan Carlton. In the last several years there has been a great deal of growth in numbers and outreach. In the late 90’s major expansion was done on our church building to handle the great space needs for Sunday School and other ministry activities. In 1999, the church had to add a second Sunday morning service. In 2002 a third service was added, and in 2006 Spring Hill became a “Multisite” church with the start of Spring Hill Spotswood at Ruckersville Elementary School and Spring Hill Seminole at the Carmike Theater. Future opportunities to expand are a constant matter of prayer as we seek to always be open to God’s leading to do what God is blessing.
Our church has remained for over 150 years. It has continued through turbulent political upheavals and social changes. Buildings have gone up and come down several times. Six generations of members have come and gone. Spring Hill has maintained its continuity through all of this the same way that the universal church has--- by holding to one faith and one Lord.
