Helping Our Neighbors in Need
Instructions for Sponsors
The GRACE Thanksgiving Box ministry is a terrific opportunity to be involved in missions right here in our own backyard! There are many families in our community who struggle with simply putting food on the table--and here is a chance to provide a simple meal for others so that they can focus on the bountiful blessings of our Heavenly Father! Our goal is to provide families with a turkey or ham and a box of food so they can prepare a Thanksgiving dinner in the comfort of their own home. Here are some guidelines: Each family tag has an assigned number. The tag includes the number of people in the household. Sponsors choose a tag and will shop for a Thanksgiving meal for that family, filling a sturdy box with items that might be reminiscent of your own Thanksgiving holiday meals. The list contains some suggested items--but feel free to add other non-perishable foods you think might be a welcome addition. |
A sample box might include:
Packaged stuffing mix Canned vegetables (potatoes, corn, green beans, carrots, etc.) Canned yams Canned cranberry sauce Gravy mixes Boxed macaroni & cheese Instant or fresh potatoes Seasoned rice mix or other non-perishable side dish mixes Cornbread mix Dinner rolls Canned pie filling Pudding mix Cookie or cake mix Non-refrigerated pie crust (No frozen or refrigerated items, please!) 2-3 cans of a particular item will usually be sufficient for a family of four. Most canned or dry goods have the number of servings listed on the packaging. You might even add a little extra so a family can invite a lonely relative or neighbor to join them in a celebration of thankfulness on this special day. |
You might also include some festive napkins or table decor, or perhaps a Thanksgiving card. Sponsors are also encouraged to donate $10 to help cover the cost of the hams or turkeys (either cash or a check made out to GRACE or Greene Alliance can be included in an envelope in your box). GRACE will purchase the meats in bulk from a single vendor at a reduced price and the family's choice will be available on Distribution Day along with their numbered box full of goodies you have so generously provided.
PLEASE securely attach the numbered tag to the family's box(es). As a precaution, you may also want to write the family's number on the side of each box just in case the tag gets separated in transit! If you are providing for a larger family and have more than one box, please write the family's number on each box, along with a helpful guide like #35, Box 1 of 2, #35, Box 2 of 2 so the family will be sure to get all the wonderful items you have carefully chosen for them to enjoy on Thanksgiving Day. NOTE: Some tags may have a notation "DELIVER" or "FG." This is for the GRACE distribution volunteers only, so don't worry about having to deliver your box other than to Spring Hill. |
Boxes are due back at Spring Hill no later than noon on Sunday, November 13. Volunteers will then deliver the boxes to the American Legion Hall right after church services, so please make sure your boxes are ready to be loaded up by noon!
Thank you so much for helping to ensure that some of our precious neighbors who are struggling financially can provide a holiday meal for their loved ones on this special day of thanksgiving and recognizing the goodness of God. |
